Our Year 5 Diary - Spring Term
The Spring term has been an exciting and enriching time for Year 5, with a strong focus on Ancient Greece inspiring much of our learning across the curriculum.
A major highlight of the term was our annual class production, where the children performed The Minotaur. The class put on three fantastic shows for parents, showcasing their hard work, enthusiasm, and creativity. The rest of the Key Stage played an important role too, supporting the performance with choreographed dances and group songs that helped bring the story to life. The production was a great success, and it was wonderful to see the children’s confidence grow. Many discovered new talents and skills they hadn’t realised they had before!

In English, the children explored a range of Greek myths, which sparked their imagination and inspired them to create their own adaptations in their writing. This linked beautifully with our history learning, where we delved into Ancient Greek civilisation. The children also made connections to the concept of democracy, taking part in debates and developing their speaking and listening skills.
World Book Day was another highlight, with the children taking part in a reading carousel. Each station introduced them to a different genre, including myths and legends, narrative fiction, autobiographies, non-fiction texts, and graphic novels. This gave the children the opportunity to explore new types of books and discover genres they might not usually choose.
In Science, our focus was on Earth and Space. To enhance their learning, the children visited a Space Centre, where they carried out research to support their classroom work. They explored concepts such as day and night and demonstrated their understanding by creating their own podcasts to explain these ideas to others.
Overall, it has been a fantastic term full of creativity, collaboration, and discovery. The children have shown great enthusiasm in all areas of their learning, and we are very proud of their achievements.
Year 5 Diary- Autumn 2025
Year 5 has had a vibrant and rewarding autumn term, filled with hands‑on learning and plenty of moments to be proud of.
They began the term by designing and building their own solar‑powered cars, bringing science and creativity together in an exciting engineering challenge.

Their enthusiasm for language shone through during the Poetry Competition, where they delivered thoughtful and imaginative performances that showcased confidence and creativity.
Curriculum Focus Week gave pupils the chance to dive more deeply into the key theme of ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’, strengthening their understanding in a meaningful way.
In art, we explored Scandinavian influences and studied Edvard Munch’s The Scream, using it as inspiration for expressive and atmospheric pieces.
Science lessons were equally lively, with practical experiments that helped them investigate materials, their properties and the forces that act upon them.
Music has been another highlight. Year 5 explored pitch, structure, form, and the role of technology in music‑making, playing a variety of instruments and experimenting with digital tools to create their own compositions.
In mathematics, they developed a secure understanding of place value up to one million, giving them strong foundations for the challenges ahead.
Their writing has also grown in sophistication, as they produced pieces for a range of purposes and learned to use parenthesis, relative clauses and modal verbs with increasing confidence.
