Loughborough Primary Schools Swimming Gala
On March 2nd 2003, the Loughborough Primary Schools Swimming Gala took place at
Charnwood Leisure Centre. There were 20 schools from Loughborough, Shepshed,
Mountsorrel, Woodhouse Eaves and Hathern.
The under 9s gala began first. Representing Holywell there was Samantha, Sarah,

together and gained good results in their races.
Holywell were represented in the under 11s gala by Leonie, JackB, Jack P, Mark,
Alastair, Elizabeth, Elise, Lucy. Our older team were absolutely brilliant. Leonie
came 2nd in the breast stroke, Elise came first in the front crawl, Lucy was 4th in
the front crawl and Molly was 4th in the front crawl. Jack came 2nd in the 50m freestyle,
Mark came 2nd in the breast stroke, Alastair came 2nd in the 25m freestyle and Jack B
was 4th in the back crawl.
Alastair, Jack P, Elise and Leonie reached the final in the relay and were just pipped
at the post by Fairfield.
Leicestershire County Cross Country
Well done to Elise, Harriet, Scott, Lucy, Matthew K and Jack who represented
Loughborough at the County Cross Country Championships at Beaumont Park, Leicester.
Loughborough Area Cross Country
Well done to the 29 Holywell children who competed in the Loughborough Area Cross
Country Championships at Derby Road Playing Fields, Loughborough.
Holywell Cross Country Challenge
On April 4th the Holywell Cross Country Challenge took place at Derby Road Playing
Fields. The schools involved were Stonebow, Rosebery, Boothwood, Thorpe Acre Juniors
and Holywell. Around thirty children competed on behalf of Holywell and we gained some
very good results.
The championships were won by Stonebow who had the lowest score over the four races.
Badminton
Mr Ali has been running a badminton club in school for the last two terms. The club has
been well attended and the children have greatly appreciated Mr Ali's instruction and
expertise. The club's season ended with a finals session at Loughborough Leisure Centre.
Tom B, Ben P, Ben H, Anya, Sina, Thomas M, David W, Sheevam, Emily, Joe, Dominic and
Marcus,
The two children who won their way through to the final were Anya and Sheevam. The final
was played back at school. Sheevam won the first game and Anya won the second game. The
deciding game was very close with Anya gaining the lead for most of the match then
suddenly Sheevam found his form and went on to win.
Loughborough Youth Games Girl's Football Tournament
On Thursday 8th May 2003 22 of Holywell's finest met at Derby Road Playing Fields,
Loughborough. They were there to represent Holywell in girls football. There was plenty
of opposition from Rothley, Wymeswold, Mountfields, Boothwood and St Peter and St Paul's
from Syston.
In the first round our C team the Holywell Heroines met Rothley B team. Megan played an
excellent game in goal and conceded no goals at all. We had plenty of attempts at goal
but just couldn't seem to get one. Sian played an excellent defensive role aided by
Krupa and Catherine. The end result was 0-0. We gained 1 point for the game.
Holywell Hammers (B) met Mountfields Lodge. The girls were a little nervous as it was
most of the girls' first game. Stephanie and Carol played an excellent game and Harriet
was super in goal. Unfortunately Mountfields were an excellent team and the result was
3-0 in their favour.
Holywell Harriers (A) met Rothley B and were soon off to a flying start with goals from
Elise and Sarah. The whole team pulled together and it resulted in a 4-0 win for the
team.
Holywell Harriers then went on to play against Holywell Hammers. Sarah scored a hatrick
for the Harriers but the Hammers did not give up. The Hammers played an exceptional game with attempts on goal from Beth, Jo and Christie Jade. The end result was 3-0 to Holywell Harriers.
Holywell Heroines had drawn Boothwood in their next match. Unfortunately for the heroines
Boothwood scored 3 goals but the heroines did not give up. They were finally rewarded
with a goal from Heidi which resulted in Mr D having to shake Mrs Foster's blue and white
pom poms on the sideline!
The final result was Boothwood 3, Holywell Heroines 1.
Holywell Harriers played their final match of the first round against Wymeswold. Again
the harriers played an excellent game with brilliant playing from Elise, Sarah and
Emily (each of them scoring). Our defenders Yasmin, Hannah, Laura and Kate played a
cracking game and stopped most of the ball play from reaching our goalie Naomi. On
the few occasions that the ball got past them Naomi cleared it away from our goal with
one of her legendary big kicks. The end result was Holywell Harriers 4, Wymeswold 0.
Holywell Hammers (B) met Rothley in their final game and it was a very close call with
an equal amount of play from each side. Carol and Sophie played an excellent game
ensuring the ball was played forward to our attackers. With one minute to go Christie
Jade aimed at goal but one of the opposition blocked it with her hand. A penalty was
awarded and Christie-Jade stepped up to the mark with a terrified expression on her
face! There was no need for nerves she aimed a perfect shot in the corner of the goal
and won the game for the team!
Holywell Heroines played St Peter and St Paul's in their last match. The team now was
a lot more confident and this was their best game yet. Megan made some tremendous saves
as goal keeper. Lucy and Katie also played brilliantly. The end result was 0-0.
As Holywell Harriers had won all of their games and scored the most goals in the whole
tournament they went through as the winners of Group A to the semi finals against St
Peter and St Paul's. The game was very equal and the girls were very tired! With one
minute to go there was still no score, unfortunately with 30 seconds to go there was a
kerfuffle near our goal and out of nowhere a goal was scored by St Peter and St Paul's.
The girls were very disappointed but showed great sportswomanship by cheering for the
other side and going to shake hands with them.
St Peters and St Paul's went on to beat Mountfields in the final and will now represent
Loughborough in the Leicestershire Youth Games.
Thanks to all of the staff, parents and pupils who came to support the Holywell teams
especially to Mrs Foster who managed the Holywell Heroines.
Holywell should be very proud of their girls' football teams as they were the only
school with three teams. This year there have been a record amount of girls coming to
football training. Around 40 girls from years 3-6 regularly attend training sessions on
a Friday and often hold games of their own during playtimes.
Well Done girls!
